LFS ch8, run inside the chroot. FORCE_UNSAFE_CONFIGURE=1 is needed because we always build as root in the chroot (no unprivileged tester-style split like the book's optional test-suite section, which is skipped here). Corrected from an earlier unverified scaffold version of this file (was 9.5, missing the i18n patch and autoreconf/automake step). Bumped to 9.12 (2026-10-03), patch updated to the real current coreutils-9.12-i18n-1.patch per the live LFS book. Same memset_explicit-SYMBOL-exists-but-not-declared glibc 2.44 gap already documented for packages/shadow -- fixed the same way (ac_cv_func_memset_explicit=no forces gnulib to supply its own declaration+implementation instead of trusting glibc's).

Not in BLFS's own list. Class::Inspector's Makefile.PL (needed transitively by File::ShareDir, needed by XML::Parser, needed by Intltool, needed by lightdm) requires bootstrapping Module::Install::DSL -- a self-resolving problem cpanm exists specifically to handle (it auto-installs configure-time prereqs a plain `perl Makefile.PL` can't). Rather than keep hand-chasing each transitive CPAN prereq individually the way this chain has gone so far, cpanm takes over resolving the rest of it. Single self-contained fatpacked perl script, no build step -- just installed executable.

BLFS pst/cups.html, real book page fetched and followed. User-requested (added on top of the LinuxUltraOffice work so it can build with --enable-cups instead of --disable-cups) -- not in the original BLFS-desktop scope. Real sha256 computed directly, not a placeholder. Built with --with-tls=openssl instead of the book's own default GnuTLS -- confirmed as a real, genuinely supported configure value directly from CUPS's own configure script (this project has openssl already built for curl/rustc; gnutls was never built anywhere and would need its own nettle/gmp chain, a real added dependency this avoids). Deliberately scoped to core CUPS only, matching this project's own minimal-dependency bias -- cups-filters (PPD/legacy-driver print filtering), Gutenprint, hplip, and Avahi (zeroconf/network printer discovery) are all real BLFS-documented add-ons NOT built here. This means printing works for modern IPP-Everywhere/driverless network printers (added by URI/IP) and CUPS's own built-in raster/PDF output, but not older PPD-driven USB printers needing vendor drivers or auto-discovery of printers on the LAN -- a real, deliberate scope line, not an oversight. lp user (uid 9) and lpadmin group (gid 19) created directly in build.sh, guarded idempotently, matching the exact pattern openssh's own build.sh already uses for its sshd user. || Security/patch update 2.4.19 -> 2.4.20 (2026-10-08): real upstream tarball, archive integrity tested, sha256 computed from the download. || 2.4.20 does not compile without DNS-SD (this build has no Avahi/mDNSResponder): cups/dest.c uses two struct members (num_local, local_dests) that 2.4.20 added only to the DNS-SD struct. Upstream issue #1739, fixed by OpenPrinting/cups PR #1740 (merged into 2.4.x 2026-10-06, merge commit a197d30e). That exact upstream patch is pinned as an extra_source and applied after unpacking; drop it once a release containing it ships.

BLFS basicnet. Pulled in as a NetSurf dependency (its GTK frontend needs libcurl). --with-openssl (openssl already built). libpsl/nghttp2 recommended deps skipped -- curl works fine without them (no HTTP/2, simpler public-suffix handling). Uses --with-ca-bundle instead of the book's --with-ca-path=/etc/ssl/certs: the book's approach needs make-ca/p11-kit's full PKCS#11 trust-store machinery to actually populate that directory, which is a real rabbit hole (p11-kit has its own dependency chain) just for CA certs. Ships curl's own maintained cacert.pem bundle instead (fetched via wget at build time, since curl itself isn't built yet this early in its own build) -- same practical outcome, far less new infrastructure.

BLFS multimedia/dav1d.html. Recommended by Firefox for AV1 video decode support.

LFS ch8. Skips the optional ninja test. The /etc/machine-id symlink target won't exist until systemd-machine-id-setup runs at first boot (see systemd's known gap) -- the symlink itself is still created, just dangling until then.

Deprecated GLib bindings for D-Bus. Only needed because mate-session-manager (>=0.76) and mate-settings-daemon (>=0.74) still PKG_CHECK_MODULES it in MATE 1.28 (confirmed in their configure). BLFS lfs/dbus-glib.html.

BLFS gnome/dconf.html (editor component skipped, only the base dconf library/service is needed here). Added as a real dependency of mate-desktop (see packages/mate-desktop), itself needed by pluma (see packages/pluma) -- the whole chain was pulled in per explicit user request to install pluma as a real end-to-end verification case for the new package-manager/source-build feature. Plain meson build, -Dbash_completion=false per BLFS (no bash-completion package in this project). Real build bug: dconf's own meson_options.txt defaults `vapi=true` (client/meson.build then unconditionally requires the `vapigen` dependency, i.e. Vala, which this project has never built), failing with `Dependency "vapigen" not found` -- fixed with `-D vapi=false` (this project has no Vala consumers, matching the same reasoning as skipping introspection/gir elsewhere). Second real build bug: `man=true` (also default) tries to generate man pages via `xsltproc` fetching `http://docbook.sourceforge.net/release/xsl/current/manpages/docbook.xsl` over the network -- this chroot has no general internet access during package builds (only a couple of special-cased packages like rustc ever needed it, via a dedicated resolv.conf fix) and no local docbook-xsl stylesheet catalog installed either, so the fetch fails with 'Attempt to load network entity'. Fixed with `-D man=false` -- no man pages are ever read by anything in this project's automated system anyway.

LFS ch8. Test-framework tool, needed to run other packages' optional test suites (which we skip anyway) but still part of the real build order.

BLFS general-libraries. update-desktop-database/desktop-file-validate -- recommended runtime dep of xfce4-session. No test suite.

LFS ch8, final native build. Skips the optional make check.

DocBook XML DTD 4.5 -- BLFS. Required by KDocTools (FindDocBookXML4). ship_in_iso=false, KDE Plasma chain.

DocBook non-namespaced XSL stylesheets 1.79.2 -- BLFS. Required by KDocTools (FindDocBookXSL). ship_in_iso=false.

A small, standalone embeddable JavaScript engine (duktape.org), added solely as a dependency for packages/polkit -- modern polkit (>=~121) dropped mozjs entirely and now hard-requires duktape (>=2.2.0, confirmed directly from polkit's own real meson.build dependency() call) for its .rules JS rule-evaluation engine. No LFS/BLFS book page exists for this (neither project covers it) -- built directly from duktape's own official 'dist' source tarball (duktape.org/duktape-2.7.0.tar.xz, NOT the raw GitHub checkout, which lacks the pre-generated amalgamated duktape.c/duktape.h/duk_config.h and instead needs its own Python-based build tooling to produce them). The dist tarball ships a real, official Makefile.sharedlibrary + duktape.pc.in specifically for this exact use case (building/installing a real shared libduktape.so + pkg-config file) -- used directly rather than hand-rolled, matching this project's own preference for using a real upstream-provided build path when one exists.

Not a BLFS book package. Provides `pahole`, needed by the kernel's CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF (converts DWARF debug info into BTF type info) which CONFIG_SCHED_CLASS_EXT depends on -- part of the sched_ext chain per explicit user request. Version 1.31 comfortably exceeds the kernel's PAHOLE_VERSION >= 122 requirement. -DLIBBPF_EMBEDDED=OFF deliberately set -- dwarves' CMakeLists.txt defaults to a git submodule for libbpf (no git in this project), so this switches it to find the already-built system libbpf via pkg-config instead (dwarves depends on libbpf being built first). Uses the same CMake+Ninja pattern as other CMake-based packages in this project.

LFS ch8, last package of the core real order. Skips the optional test suite and the optional info-doc install-info steps (those update a live index file that's awkward to handle correctly through $PKG_DESTDIR; the info pages themselves are still installed, just not re-indexed).

EFL 1.28.1 -- Enlightenment Foundation Libraries (eina/eet/evas/ecore/edje/elementary/emotion/eldbus/efreet/eeze/elua). The C library base for the Enlightenment desktop. Big meson build. X11-only, no Wayland/DRM/SDL/framebuffer, no C++/Lua/Mono auto-bindings, no gstreamer/physics/vnc, embedded lua (no luajit needed). ship_in_iso=false -- Enlightenment is a Packages-page install, off linuxdoors.iso. github archive source (the download.enlightenment.org tarball bundles ~400MB of .edj wallpapers).

Enlightenment 0.27.1 (E27) -- the EFL desktop shell / compositing WM. X11-only build (all Wayland outputs disabled). Ships /usr/share/xsessions/enlightenment.desktop so lightdm/x2go offer it. Trimmed modules: no bluez5/connman/packagekit/geolocation (not on this system). Needs EFL (packages/efl), linux-pam, xkeyboard-config, hwdata. ship_in_iso=false. github archive (the download.enlightenment.org tarball is 400MB of bundled wallpapers).

evolution-data-server 3.56.2 -- calendar/addressbook backend. gnome-shell 48 hard-requires libecal-2.0. Built with GTK/GOA/weather/phonenumber OFF for a lean session-only build. ship_in_iso=false, built on .101.

BLFS general/exiv2.html (C++ image-metadata/EXIF library). Needed by gexiv2 (a GObject wrapper around it), which GIMP requires directly for reading/writing image metadata. Skips CMAKE_SKIP_INSTALL_RPATH=ON from the book's own command (that flag is there so a *system* install doesn't bake in a build-tree rpath; harmless either way with a destdir capture, but left out since it's not needed here) and skips the test suite. EXIV2_ENABLE_CURL=yes reuses this project's already-built curl.

BLFS XFCE. Extension library used by thunar/xfdesktop/xfce4-panel and required by lightdm-gtk-greeter. Skips the optional make check.

LFS ch8. Skips the optional make check and optional docs install. Bumped 2.8.2 -> 2.8.3 to track LFS 13.1's package set (sha256 from a real downloaded tarball).
